Which Matera Sassi tour should you book?

Every Matera Sassi tour compared: walks, private guides, tuk-tuks, buses, sunset tours and Bari day trips, with what each enters and a pick for each traveler.

Updated October 2026

For a first visit, book a two-hour guided walk that includes a cave house and a rock church. The Matera: Sassi Tour with Cave House and Rupestrian Church costs $33 per person for the English tour and is rated 4.7 from 7,953 GetYourGuide reviews, the most-reviewed Matera tour here. If the frescoed rock churches matter most to you, the $39 Passi nei Sassi walk goes inside Santa Maria de Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone.

Skip the walk only if the stairs rule it out (take a vehicle tour), you want your own pace (book a private guide), or you are based in Bari without a car (book a day trip). Prices below are US dollars per person on GetYourGuide, checked October 2026, except the private tours, which are priced per group.

Picks by traveler

A first visit

Book the Martulli Viaggi cave-house walk: $33, two hours, the Casa Grotta Narrante and the rock church of Sant’Antonio Abate, and 7,953 reviews at 4.7 (our breakdown). If you would pay $6 more for the frescoed Monterrone churches, take the Passi nei Sassi walk instead (our breakdown).

Limited mobility or summer heat

The eco bus at $22 keeps you seated for most of 90 minutes, with one stop of about 40 minutes at Piazza San Pietro Caveoso. Its listing does not allow non-folding wheelchairs, and no tour here promises wheelchair access. To go inside a church with less walking, the Ape Calessino tour costs $112 with a licensed guide (our breakdown).

Families

The $32 walk with a cave dwelling and cistern describes itself as suitable for all ages and is rated 4.8 from 169 (our breakdown). Leave the stroller behind: several walks and the Martulli Viaggi bus do not allow them. With up to five people, the panoramic tuk-tuk is just your family for 45 minutes at $39 each (our breakdown).

Photographers

Book the Murgia Timone sunset tour at $47. It takes you to the Belvedere di Murgia Timone, the viewpoint across the gorge, at sunset, with the transfer and park ticket included.

Couples who want privacy

The three-hour tasting walk was $281 for two as a private tour, with Madonna de Idris and a food tasting (our breakdown). For an hour on wheels, the Twingo cabriolet seats up to four of your own party at $39 each (our breakdown).

No car, staying in Bari

The bus excursion is the cheapest way there at $37 without a guide, or $84 with guides, and includes a Casa Grotta museum ticket (our breakdown). If you would pay more for a minivan and a tour leader, the minivan day trip is $163 and meets at Teatro Petruzzelli.

One day in Matera

Walk in the morning and see the sunset from the Murgia: the cave-house walk and the Murgia Timone tour come to $80 per person. Our Matera in one day guide fills in lunch and the afternoon.

Guided, free or self-guided

The streets of the Sassi are public and free, so you can walk them alone with a map. None of the tours we compare is a free, tip-based walk.

For a low-cost commentary, the Sassi di Matera Historical Self-Guided Audio Tour costs $4 and plays on your own smartphone through the ITGUIDES app, with more than 30 geolocated points. It is rated 3.8 from 234 reviews, well below the guided walks, and includes no entry tickets. Download it on wifi before you set out.

A guide changes what you get inside. Three rock churches (Santa Lucia alle Malve, Santa Maria de Idris with San Giovanni in Monterrone, and San Pietro Barisano) are booked by date and time at €4.50 each, non-refundable, and the walks that include a church arrange the ticket for you. Visitors with an authorized guide pay a reduced rate, from €2.50 for one church. On your own, you also choose between four different cave houses, from the Antica Casa Grotta at €2 to the Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario at €8. Our tickets guide lists them all.

Some low-star reviewers of the big walks felt they could have seen as much alone. If you have read up and mainly want views, the audio guide and a church ticket will do. If you want the interiors explained, book the walk.

Vehicle tours cut out most of the stairs and show you more of the Sassi from outside. The two buses cost $22 each, and the Martulli Viaggi bus is the cheapest tour with a page on this site (our breakdown). The eco bus has the larger review count and a 40-minute stop at Piazza San Pietro Caveoso. The panoramic tuk-tuk and the Twingo carry only your own group, up to five and four people. The Vespa tour asks for a driving license, and the self-drive e-tuk-tuk is seasonal: its first bookable date was 9 January 2027, so check dates. The Ape Calessino is the only vehicle tour here with a licensed guide who takes you inside a church. The tuk-tuk page and the open-top bus page go further.

The first three are Matera only; the last three add Alberobello. Read the guide line carefully. The $37 bus option has no guide, and the two tour-leader trips give you commentary on the coach and free time in each town with no guide walking with you. The Matera tour from Bari page and the Matera and Alberobello page sort them out.

Matera tour reviews: the common complaints

The low-star reviews repeat a few themes. On the larger walks, a few reviewers found the guide hard to hear and asked for headsets. The Seekers walk uses a radio guide when more than 10 people join, and the Matera City Tour walk sells headsets for €0.50. Some reviewers on several walks struggled with a guide’s English. Several day-trip reviewers say they expected a guide in Matera and got a tour leader on the coach. The panoramic tuk-tuk, the Bari bus excursion and the Italygonia private tour share the lowest rating among the tours with a page here, 4.2.

Know before you book

Expect stairs. The Sassi are stepped lanes and uneven stone, most walking tours say they are not suitable for people with mobility impairments, and no official step count exists. Wear closed shoes: the Seekers walk bars high heels and the Murgia sunset tour bars open-toed shoes.

Choose the English option. One popular walk, Turisti in Puglia’s “Matera: Guided Walking Tour”, sells only an Italian option through January 2027, so it is not in the tables.

Check the cancellation terms. Most listings refund in full up to 24 hours ahead, but the Italygonia private tour says it is non-refundable within 48 hours. The Matera City Tour walk waits five minutes for latecomers, and its tickets cannot move to another time.

Avoid 2 July for church visits: all Oltre l’Arte sites close for the Festa della Bruna. Our best time to visit guide covers the seasons.
