How the Day Trip from Bari Works

Four steps from Teatro Petruzzelli to the Sassi and back, as the listing describes them.

  1. Book the shared trip

Reserve on GetYourGuide at $163 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The shared trip runs with at least 4 people; if it falls short, the operator offers a supplement, a new date or a full refund.

  2. Meet at Teatro Petruzzelli

Meet in central Bari at Teatro Petruzzelli and board a minivan that carries no more than 8 people. The drive to Matera takes about an hour. In high season a second minivan can join, for up to 16 people in all.

  3. Walk the Sassi for two hours

A local tour leader takes you through the Sassi for about two hours. The listing includes an audio-guided visit to a typical cave house and a tasting of a local liqueur. Wear closed shoes: the lanes go up and down all the way.

  4. Free time, then back to Bari

You get about two hours on your own for lunch and photos, then the minivan drives you back to Teatro Petruzzelli. The scheduled end is 3:00 p.m., and the operator suggests leaving two hours after that before any other booking.

Bari Day Trip Guide

Matera from Bari: Which Day Trip to Book

What each trip includes, how long you spend in the Sassi, and when the train makes more sense.

The simplest Matera tour from Bari is the Bari: Matera Day Trip. A minivan picks your group up at Teatro Petruzzelli, a local tour leader walks you through the Sassi for about two hours, you get two more hours on your own, and the trip is scheduled to finish back in Bari at 3:00 p.m. It costs $163 per person in a group of no more than 8 and is rated 4.7 from 73 GetYourGuide reviews. To spend less, the From Bari: Excursion to Matera by Bus costs $37 for the coach alone or $84 with a guided walk. Prices are per person in US dollars, checked October 2026.

Matera is about 68 km from central Bari by road, roughly an hour’s drive. Each of the three main trips below gives you around four hours in Matera: enough for a guided walk through Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, lunch and some photos.

Quick picks

  • Small group with the least to organize: the $163 day trip from Teatro Petruzzelli, with a cave house visit by audio guide and a liqueur tasting included.
  • The longest guided walk: From Bari: Half-Day Guided Tour of Matera, $124, with 2.5 hours guided on the itinerary and entry to a Casa Grotta. It also leaves from Polignano a Mare and Monopoli at the same price (our breakdown).
  • The lowest price: the coach excursion at $37 without a guide, or $84 with a 1.5-hour guided walk. Both fares list a Casa Grotta museum ticket (our breakdown).
  • Matera and the trulli in one day: see our Matera and Alberobello page.
  • Your own car and driver: From Bari: Private Half-Day Trip with Matera Guided Tour, $337 for a group of up to 3, with door-to-door transfer and an optional guide. It has only 9 reviews, at 4.0. Our private tour page covers private guides in Matera.

How the three main day trips differ

The $163 day trip is the small-group option. You ride in a minivan of no more than 8 (two minivans in busy months), and the shared trip needs at least 4 people to run. In Matera a local tour leader leads a walk of about two hours, and the listing includes an audio-guided visit to a typical cave house and a tasting of Amaro Lucano, the local liqueur. It does not name the cave house. Lunch is not included.

The $124 half-day tour travels by van from the Camera di Commercio in Bari, or from Polignano a Mare or Monopoli. The itinerary gives 2.5 hours of guided walking and 1.5 hours of free time, with entry to a Casa Grotta that the listing does not name. It needs at least 4 people, it can be booked as a private trip with hotel pickup, and the operator sends the final itinerary the day before by WhatsApp. It is rated 4.5 from 149 reviews.

The coach excursion is the budget option. It leaves from the Piazzale Cristoforo Colombo car park in Bari by air-conditioned coach, and the listing promises about 4 hours in Matera, leaving at 3:00 p.m. for a 4:00 p.m. drop-off in Bari. Pick your fare with care: $37 buys the coach, a Casa Grotta museum ticket, a digital brochure and an audio guide in five languages; $84 adds a guided walk of about 1.5 hours. It is rated 4.2 from 200 reviews.

How much time you get in Matera

Plan on about four hours in the city whichever trip you book. The day trip splits it into two hours guided and two free, the half day into 2.5 guided and 1.5 free, and the coach into 1.5 guided and about 2 free. Four hours covers a walk through both Sassi, a cave house and lunch. It does not cover the Belvedere di Murgia Timone across the gorge, which none of these itineraries visit; our sunset tour page covers that view.

Your real time can be shorter than the itinerary. A few reviewers on each trip lost time to a late start or a late guide, and on the coach trip several said the drop-off point was a long walk from the old town. If you want a slow day with a museum and a long lunch, our one-day Matera guide plans it, and a night in Matera gives you the evening too.

Train or tour from Bari

You can reach Matera on your own. Ferrovie Appulo Lucane runs a narrow-gauge train from Bari, and there are buses. The catch is that FAL trains do not run on Sundays or holidays, when buses replace them, and the train takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on the service. Our Bari to Matera guide has the train, bus and driving details.

Going on your own suits you if you want a whole day or more, or if you prefer to book a walk once you arrive. The Matera: Sassi Tour with Cave House and Rupestrian Church costs $33 for two hours in English with a cave house and a rock church, and meets in Matera (our breakdown). A packaged trip suits you if you have one day, it is a Sunday, or you would sooner not handle timetables and the walk in from the station.

What reviewers say goes wrong

The low-star reviews repeat a few themes, and knowing them helps you pick. On the day trip, a few guests said the cave house, the audio guide or the tasting did not happen, and one waited half an hour for the walk to start. On the half day, some found the guided part shorter than the 2.5 hours listed, groups larger than they expected and headsets that did not work. On the coach, reviewers mention late starts, a guide who arrived late, one guided walk cancelled the day before for low numbers, and a drop-off a long walk from the Sassi in summer heat.

None of this is universal: each trip is rated 4.2 or higher. Book the guided fare if the walk matters to you, keep your phone charged for WhatsApp messages, and save the meeting point offline.

Altamura and Matera in one day

Two coach trips add Altamura, the town known for its bread. From Bari: Excursion to Altamura and Matera costs $73, gives an hour in Altamura and 2.5 hours in Matera, with a guided visit only on the dedicated option; it is rated 4.6 from 33. Altamura + Matera Bus: Free Stop at the Bakery and Guided Tour of the Sassi di Matera costs $99 and includes a two-hour guided walk with a furnished Casa Grotta and a frescoed rock church, then an hour in Altamura; it has 12 reviews at 4.6.

Before you book

The Sassi are steep steps and uneven stone, and the coach and private listings say they are not suitable for people with mobility impairments. The day trip’s own description warns that you walk up and down a lot. Wear closed shoes with grip, carry water, and bring a hat from June to September. Cave house and church tickets are only included where a listing says so; our tickets guide lists the prices.

Every trip here offers free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Pick your date, then check availability for the day trip from Bari.

"Mario was our guide on May 27th, and he did such a good job switching between English and Spanish to accommodate our group. He was knowledgeable and the whole tour was a very pleasant experience!"

Barb

"Very interesting and beautiful tour. Floriana was welcoming and informative."

Susan

"Tour was good but did not include all events as advertised. I did not mind this myself and would have loved much more about the history and less being led into various shops. Would really have appreciated being taken into some churches as advertised on the tour."

GetYourGuide traveler

"I enjoyed the day trip as the guide was excellent and had a great personality. He was very knowledgeable and provided responses to all my many questions. The free time was nice but maybe too much."

Lori

"The views were incredible, history fascinating and guide was TOP NOTCH!!!"

GetYourGuide traveler

"Matera is a magical spot! Tour could be shorter as most stores are closed"
