Matera: Walking Tour with Cave House and Church Entry

5.0 (54 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Julia Rempel runs this two-and-a-half-hour walking tour of the Sassi just for your group, with entry tickets to a cave house museum and a rupestrian (rock-cut) church included. It cost $90 per person on a bookable date in October 2026, more than the $32 to $39 group walks compared here. Its 5.0 from 54 GetYourGuide reviews is the top rating among the tours on this site. It is a small sample, so read the reviews before you book.

You meet outside the Banco di Napoli at Piazza Vittorio Veneto 51, in the upper town, and the tour returns there at the end, so you finish on the same square. The guide covers how the Sassi grew and changed, from UNESCO's account of first occupation in the Palaeolithic to the relocation of residents in the 1950s, and how a district once described as the 'shame of Italy' became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Inside the cave house museum you see how peasant families lived, and the church on the route is one the listing calls among the most decorated rock churches in the Sassi. Neither site is named, so ask your guide which ones you will enter. From balconies along the way you look across the ravine to the Murgia Materana Park. Tours run in English, German, Italian and Russian.

This tour suits couples, families or small groups who want a private guide at a per-person price. The listing shows no low-star review themes, but with 54 reviews there is less to judge from than on the larger tours. Expect to climb steps to several stops. The tour runs rain or shine and is not suitable for people with mobility impairments.

What Travelers Say

Rated 5.0/5 by 54 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

We learned so much and saw the most amazing sites. The tour is well paced and absolutely worth doing. I would never have seen half of the highlights if I did it on my own.

Silvio was great! Really enjoyed the tour and he was so patient with us taking a lot of photos. Very informative tour that taught us about the history of the Sassi. Took us to a lot of spots we wouldn’t have known or gone to otherwise. At the end of the tour, he pointed us to the best viewpoint (and where James Bond was filmed). Highly highly recommend!
